ELKINS PARK, PA, June 18, 2008--BioStrategy Partners, Inc. (BioSP), a virtual incubator dedicated to helping emerging stage life science companies in the Greater Philadelphia area reach their next level of commercialization, announced today that Dr. Lorraine Keller and Dr. Maureen O’Leary have joined in the new posts of portfolio manager for the organization’s Corporate Development Program and program director for its Due Diligence Program respectively. They report to BioSP Executive Director, Karen J. Hanson, PhD.
“BioSP specializes in offering technology and business development services and assistance to nascent companies led by first time entrepreneurs and scientific founders,” said Hanson. “By helping emerging companies to become early stage companies, we fill the pipeline for entrepreneurs and investors further downstream. I am thrilled that experts of Drs. Keller and O’Leary’s caliber will be working with these companies. Their addition represents a milestone in our growth as an organization and in our ability to meaningfully contribute to the life sciences sector in the region.” Since August 2007, approximately 10 companies have participated in the Due Diligence Program and there are currently four companies in the Corporate Development Program.
As portfolio manager, Keller is the key contact for the companies in BioStrategy Partners’ Corporate Development Program, through which they gain access to mentors, experts and service providers who work with each company to complete goals set out in a customized, milestone-based Development Plan. Among the services offered are: marketing, business strategy, financial planning, intellectual property assessment, licensing, regulatory affairs and human resources.
Co-founder and executive vice president of Immunotope, Inc., a biotechnology company that is developing immunotherapies to treat and prevent cancer and infectious diseases, Keller has an extensive background in technology assessment, business strategy, business development, competitive intelligence and communications. She was co-founder and vice president of marketing and communication for RheoGene, Inc., director of marketing and communications for RHeoGene, LLC, and a founding member of the Scientific Advisory Board of BioSP. During her career at Rohm and Haas Company, she was a senior scientist in the biotechnology group, and program manager in Human and Environmental Toxicology. She holds an B.A. in biological sciences from Smith College, and received her Ph.D. in plant physiology and molecular biology from Cornell University.
Program director O’Leary meets companies during their application process to BioSP and is responsible for leading these emerging (typically pre-seed) firms through the organization’s Due Diligence Program, which includes planning and start-up assistance, introductions and networking opportunities, and in-depth business and technical reviews by an experienced panel tailored specifically for each company. This review determines each company’s eligibility for BioSP’s Corporate Development Program.
O’Leary has more than ten years’ experience in the many aspects of moving technologies from the laboratory to commercial environments, including executive recruiting, market research, business plan development, grant writing, process simulation proof-of-concept, licensing, prototype development and private equity financing. She also has expertise in intellectual property strategy, licensing and patent mining technology. In the course of her career, she has had primary responsibility for over 200 technology transfer agreements. As director of Start-Up Business Development at the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Technology Transfer, she helped launch 15 startup companies. O’Leary holds a B.A. from Wellesley College and a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Pennsylvania.
